The United States and Finland have approved a memorandum of understanding on the construction of icebreakers for the U.S. Coast Guard.
According to information from the Reuters agency, the agreement, reached between U.S. President Donald Trump and Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, aims to establish the foundations for commercial contracts between Americans and Finnish companies.
Finnish shipbuilders are expected to construct four medium icebreakers at shipyards in Finland. Meanwhile, the Americans are expected to use their expertise to build up to seven more ships of this type in U.S. shipyards.
The new Coast Guard icebreakers aim to strengthen U.S. national security in the Arctic, a region of “strategic importance,” according to President Stubb.
“We are buying the best icebreakers in the world, and Finland is known for building them,” said Trump. The 11 new medium icebreakers are expected to cost around US$ 6.1 billion, according to a White House official.
